Open Grade Level Leadership Committee Positions
We have some openings to serve on our Grade Level Leadership Committees (GLLCs). We want you (yes, YOU!) to join the many principals and assistant principals who've become more involved with us. Our board and committee members consistently tell us about how incredibly valuable the networking and professional learning is to them. Need more convincing? Check out AWSP President Cameron Grow’s last column in Washington Principal. Or read Dr. Scott Seaman’s article about the new changes to our governance structure. Remember, AWSP is YOUR professional membership organization, and the more diverse and unique voices we have working on behalf of principals and assistant principals in our state, the stronger we all are. Check out the current openings and join a committee today.

A Year-Long 50th Anniversary Party
AWSP is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2022, and you’re invited to celebrate with us! Now more than ever, AWSP is here to support school leaders like you in the education of each and every student. We’re celebrating with a year-long focus on special guests, member benefits, giveaways, and ways to get involved with AWSP. We’re very excited to offer you several in-person opportunities to meet up and connect with colleagues in your region. By now you should have received in the mail a cool anniversary sticker and an “invitation.” The party starts NOW! Find all the details at www.awsp.org/50.
AWSP Staff Changes
With the new year has come many changes within the AWSP staff. Macy Bruhy (formerly our Professional Learning and Marketing Coordinator) has graciously stepped into the huge role of Member Engagement & State Programs Administrator. She's the one you'll talk to about renewing your membership, intern grant support, change of status, and more.
With Macy taking on the membership position, we welcomed Dameon Brown to the AWSP team in January as Professional Learning Services Specialist. Dameon is a pretty cool guy, and you can read more about him and his role in this spotlight feature of him.
Kerry Mill, who has been with AWSP for over 10 years as our Administrative Assistant & Member Support Specialist, announced that she will be retiring in April. This is awesome news for Kerry and very sad news for us. We see a lot of exciting travel in Kerry's future.... mostly to warm, sunny locations.
With Kerry leaving, we will be welcoming a new staff member to our team in July. We will tell you more about this exciting news in the next issue, but for now we can say that this person is a currently a teacher, which is why they are waiting until July to join us!
And.... perhaps one of the most exciting updates of all, our Digital Content Creator Xenia Gomez and her husband Evaristo are expecting their first baby (a boy!) this summer. Congratulations, Xenia and Evi!
2022 Principals and Assistant Principals of the Year
Each year, AWSP recognizes an outstanding principal as the Washington State Principal of the Year. We also recognize one Washington State Assistant Principal of the Year. The awards provide significant recognition on the regional and state level. Principals and assistant principals are nominated each year. Their applications are scored by a review panel, and four winners are chosen to represent our state at the national level. Those awards are:
  • National Association of Secondary School Principals | Principal of the Year
  • National Association of Secondary School Principals | Assistant Principal of the Year
  • National Association of Elementary School Principals | National Distinguished Principal
  • National Association of Elementary School Principals | National Outstanding Assistant Principal
From that list, we select one state principal as our Principal of the Year and one AP as our Assistant Principal of the Year. NASSP will select one principal and one Assistant Principal to be their respective national winner.
Check out this year’s winners and watch for articles about each one in the next issue of Washington Principal.
